USG Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Initiative
Message from the Chancellor:
"Georgia must respond to the increasing state and national crises in the education of mathematicians, scientists, technicians and engineers, and to the preparation of science and mathematics teachers. Addressing the need to increase the number of baccalaureate degrees in these fields is one of the highest priorities of the University System of Georgia. Accordingly, I have committed to the provision of funding to support the successful implementation of our MATH + SCIENCE = SUCCESS Initiative over the next several years."
The Armstrong Atlantic State University STEM Initiative
Armstrong Atlantic State University has a rich tradition of collaboration for the purpose of improved K-16 student learning and is proud to be a part of the University System STEM Initiative. Administration and faculty alike have actively supported work in this arena with particularly strong emphases on collaboration between the College of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences in the preparation of pre service teachers, the engagement of STEM faculty in the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning in core courses, and STEM faculty outreach to K-12 schools & teachers.
STEM Implementation at Armstrong will involve four primary strategies: 1) integrated and creative departmental initiatives to increase and retain STEM majors, 2) coordination of a summer Academy for Future Teachers to engage rising juniors and seniors in STEM career mentoring and STEM teaching experiences, 3) an internal small grants program to create K-16 professional learning communities, and 4) an internal small grants program to support faculty research in the scholarship of teaching and learning.
