Beginning in Spring 2005, each Spring semester, a group of faculty and students in the department of mathematics, called the Armstrong Problem Solvers, worked on problems posted in mathematics journals, and submitted their solutions. Four of the Armstrong Problem Solvers' solutions written in Spring 2009 were published in Mathematics Horizons and Mathematics Magazine, and 13 additional solutions were acknowledged in College Mathematics Journal, the Pi Mu Epsilon Journal, and more. See the following website for more details. The group begins this year's session, and would like to invite students and faculty members who enjoy thinking about math problems, to participate via our website: the Armstrong Problem Solvers

Richard Wallace (chemistry) and co-author Markku Hakkinen from the University of Helsinki have published a recent paper in the journal Folia Malaysiana. The paper, "Challenges Ahead For The Banana", Markku Häkkinen and Richard H. Wallace, Folia Malaysiana, 2009, 10, 23-3, describes a number of diseases that attack bananas and their potential impact on the fourth most important food crop in the world. These diseases include Black Sigatoka disease, Banana Bunch Top disease and a new form of the Panama disease. This review contains historical as well as current state of the issues that banana production faces as well as possible solutions for the problems faced.

The Department of Chemistry and Physics at Armstrong Atlantic State University will again this year host the both the regional and state level contests of the Georgia Science Bowl. This competition is part of the National Science Bowl hosted by the United States Department of Energy. The regional competition will take place on February 6 with teams from throughout the state participating at various universities, including AASU. The top teams from each region, which include some of the brightest high school science students in the state, will then come to AASU on February 27 to compete for a spot in the National Science Bowl held in Washington DC in late April. Sixty-four teams travel to Washington DC with a chance to be National Champions. The DOE National Science Bowl is a "jeopardy-style" competition with questions from astronomy, biology, chemistry, geology, physics, and mathematics. The competition is fast paced and incredibly exciting to participate in or watch. If you would like to volunteer or want more information, please contact Donna Mullenax at 912-344-2916 or Donna.Mullenax@armstrong.edu.
